In 1992, Cathy Highet and Erick Gallun spent a semester in Budapest, Hungary. Cathy studied Math in a study abroad program. Erick studied Budapest. As part of his study, he made a lot of photographs. Some of them are reproduced here.
In 2019, Cathy and Erick returned to Budapest and tried to find things they remembered and discover new things. Erick again made a lot of photographs. Some of these are here. Some of them look like things we remember and/or photographed before.
Enjoy!
Budapest 1992/2019
In 1992, we lived on Csorna Utca. The building was still there, as was the great view from the bus stop. The phone booth on the corner was gone. The corner grocery and the shops on the corner were all still there - just slightly modernized.
We were able to find some familiar sights: the train station (Nyugati Palyodvar), the fancy street (Andrassy Ut), the building where Cathy's Math Program was, and the park nearby.
In the end, we said goodbye to one of our favorite icons, the Szabadsag (Freedom/Liberty) Statue, or as we were introduced to her in 1992, "Leaping Lizzy". The Soviet Soldier mural had been removed and some poetic language added, but she was basically unchanged.
