In 1986, at age 15, I received a Pentax K1000 camera for Christmas. I started making pictures of the things around me. I used that camera, and the zoom lens I got that same Christmas, until I got my first really good digital camera in 2006. Here are some of the images that I captured on film during those 20 years.
This one is of me and was made by my friend, James Bateman. He actually had a darkroom and made his own prints.
I lived in Chicago until the summer of 1989. I made these during the time I lived there. They are all of things I saw on or around the University of Chicago campus.
In the summers from 1987 to 1992, I worked as a camp counselor at The Mountain in Highlands, North Carolina. I made pictures there as well.
My friend and mentor, Ken Kortemeir, taught me to say "making" pictures instead of "taking" pictures.
The first picture is of me. It was captured by one of the campers on a hiking trip I was leading. She did a good job.
In 1989 I moved to Portland, Oregon to attend Reed College. These are some of the pictures I made around the Reed Campus and surrounding neighborhood.
In 1992, Cathy Highet and I spent a semester in Budapest, Hungary. These photographs were captured in Hungary during that time. To see what some of this looked like in 2019, check out the Budapest 1992/2019 album!
I took some pictures during the period 1993-2003, but I spent a lot more time taking videos and making electronic music. If I find some good ones, I'll add them, but if there are any worth sharing, then they are in a box somewhere. So, this is the film archive for now. Hope you enjoy it!
